JOB DESCRIPTION:
Dis-Chem Pharmacies in Durban is offering a position for a security guard to provide security services in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended. This role is essential for the Dis-Chem Group to fulfill its security needs, ensuring the protection of assets, property, and personnel by fostering a safe environment. The security guard will be responsible for recognizing indicators of criminal behavior or disorder and addressing disturbances, all while complying with industry legislation and adhering to best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12 – Matric or possession of a Senior Certificate.
- Grade C accreditation from the PSIRA.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the retail sector, including shopping malls and warehouses.
ADVANTAGEOUS:
- A minimum of one year of relevant prior experience in a comparable position.
Job Description:
- Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings to detect suspicious activities, apprehend offenders, or remove violators in accordance with the legal authority granted within the industry and Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures for the designated position.
- Conduct random patrols of the premises on a regular basis to ensure maximum visibility and minimize risks.
- Monitor and regulate access to the premises by documenting and controlling entry through vehicle and pedestrian access points, allowing entry only to individuals with proper authorization.
- Investigate and report any signs of damage or unauthorized entry to management as they occur, taking appropriate action to safeguard Dis-Chem’s assets.
- Maintain a visible presence to deter criminal activities, prevent theft, damage, personal injury, and other dishonorable acts.
- Exhibit professionalism by being courteous, friendly, approachable, and willing to assist guests, customers, and employees.
- Implement access control measures, including searching staff, suppliers, and company merchandisers.
- Keep all registers and occurrence books up to date and complete.
- Cancel staff purchases and declared goods as necessary.
- Oversee and verify refuse removal in accordance with Dis-Chem standards.
- Safeguard the property and assets of the business from dishonest individuals and any malicious actions that could lead to company losses.
- Remain present at your post at all times while on duty.
- Foster good customer service relations with all internal and external Dis-Chem customers.
- Report any unusual or suspicious behavior exhibited by staff, customers, or suppliers.
- Be observant and vigilant during the opening and closing procedures of the site.
- Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked at the end of each day and that all water taps are turned off when applicable.
- Conduct daily personnel searches and frisking procedures.
- Ensure comprehensive vehicle inspections are performed throughout the day.
- Report any suspicious activities to management verbally in detail, followed by a written report at the earliest convenience.
- Contact law enforcement and emergency services as required, providing both verbal and written accounts in accordance with Dis-Chem protocols.
- In the event of a crisis, continue to monitor the environment and inform management of any developments that may exacerbate the situation.
- After a crisis, submit a detailed written report to management and relevant authorities, such as the police or fire services, regarding the incident and your involvement.
- Oversee alarm systems and video surveillance, operating emergency equipment as necessary.
- When working alone or during nighttime hours, maintain continuous surveillance of the premises through patrolling and monitoring systems to ensure only authorized access.
- In emergencies, assist response teams by alerting first responders and relevant personnel.
- Uphold order during evacuation procedures and at assembly points by providing clear instructions to safeguard lives and property, preventing chaos and unauthorized access.
- Provide ongoing security advice and safety tips to ensure compliance with all safety measures.
- Remain alert to any suspicious activities that could indicate a breach of security protocols.
- Quickly assess situations and respond appropriately.
- Act promptly and accurately in times of crisis – remain vigilant to avoid being caught off guard.
- Understand the appropriate responses to various hazardous situations in accordance with industry standards and Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures.
- In critical situations, such as armed robberies or assaults involving lethal weapons, immediately contact law enforcement to avert potential loss of life or property.
- Document any unusual incidents and daily operations meticulously.
- Uphold rules and regulations to deter criminal activities before they occur.
- Execute specific responsibilities – handle phone calls, reply to text and email communications, and carry out essential tasks for the department in line with Dis-Chem and industry standard operating procedures.
Core Competencies:
- Knowledge of PSIRA.
- Training and experience in fire emergencies and pertinent health and safety protocols.
- Proficiency in English – ability to read, write, and speak effectively, as it is the official language of the organization.
Beneficial:
- Proficiency in a third language.
Favorable conditions of employment include:
